The unincorporated area of Imperial is close to Arnold and the I-55 corridor and is roughly 45 driving minutes from South St Louis. Townspeople changed the name to Liberty during World War I, to avoid the association with the "imperial powers." The earlier name was restored after the war. Mastodon State Historic site and its 425 acres provide recreation and a beautiful countryside in which to live and play.
